Feel like you spend too much time scrubbing? Scotch-Brite Brand can help

  • Scotch-brite™ kitchen cleaning tools in a bucket
  • Scrubbing can be a gruelling task. That’s why for over 60 years Scotch-Brite™ Brand has been developing new technologies that help make daily cleaning easier. It began with a single scouring pad developed for the food service industry, but has since evolved into a wide range of trusted cleaning solutions for the home, including cloths, scrub sponges, and pads – with options for every type of surface.

Today there are several different materials used to make our cleaning tools, including cellulose, synthetic foam, and lightweight metal. Foam and cellulose sponges are generally combined with a non-woven abrasive surface, which gives it the power to clean stubborn messes. Stainless-steel scourers are usually a spherical shape and don’t feature added abrasives as metal scourers already offer excellent abrasive power.

Using the wrong scouring pad can scratch your crockery and kitchen utensils, and give your glasses a dull appearance. Use the product comparison below to help you choose the right product according to your cleaning needs, so that you can get twice the result for half the effort!

Knowing which kitchen sponge you need

The type and abrasive level of your kitchen cleaning equipment has a big influence on the result of your efforts. It’s all too easy to grab the heavy-duty scouring pad to clean your favourite glass, and before you know it the surface is full of nasty scratches and a dull appearance.

It’s not always possible to have the perfect tool for every job, but by understanding which cleaning tasks require a light or heavy touch, you can preserve the life and appearance of your glasses, plates, and other crockery. Use the guides below to know which type of kitchen sponge is best suited for your application.

  • How to keep your kitchen sponges clean

When used regularly, or even if just left wet for too long, sponges can start to smell. If you don't clean your sponges regularly, you could end up spreading dirt instead of removing it. That's why it's important to keep your sponges clean and fresh. The most important thing is to let it dry out completely after each use and not leave it in a humid environment.

There are several ways to clean your sponges and extend their lifespan. Here are some of the most common and effective methods:

    • Dishwasher
Place your sponge in the top rack of your dishwasher and run it on the hottest and longest cycle with the dry option. This will keep your sponge free from bad odours.

    • Microwave
Wet your sponge and place it in a microwave-safe dish. Microwave it on high for one to two minutes, or until it steams. Be careful not to touch the hot sponge or dish. Let it cool before using it again.

    • Boiling
Fill a pot with water and bring it to a boil. Add your sponge and let it boil for 10 to 15 minutes. Use tongs to remove the sponge and let it dry on a clean surface.

No matter which method you choose, make sure to rinse your sponge well after each use and wring out the excess water. Store your cleaning sponge in a dry and airy place, away from moisture and food sources. Replace your sponge whenever it starts to smell or look worn out.
